SEATTLE – January 17, 2017 –  NetHope, a global consortium of 50 of the world’s leading nonprofits, today launched the NetHope 2017 Device Challenge, a subgrant program for nonprofits to advance their missions through the use of phones, tablets, laptops/PCs, and other hardware and training.

The program comes thanks to a $5.5 million grant award from, the charitable arm of Google. This grant was part of a larger initiative from, which donated $30 million to nonprofits over the holiday season, and a total of over $100 million to nonprofits in 2016.

“The 2017 NetHope Device Challenge will bring hardware directly to nonprofits and the populations they serve around the world. We’re proud to fund the device procurement, integration, training, and connectivity costs for organizations working with the most vulnerable populations -- including women and girls -- who often struggle to access the resources, education, and opportunities they deserve. We look forward to seeing the many ways nonprofits around the world use technology to expand their programs and impact," said Sasha Buscho, Portfolio Manager for

The NetHope 2017 Device Challenge will distribute grants ranging from $250,000 to $1 million to NetHope members and eligible nonprofit organizations that can incorporate devices into their development programs for maximum social impact. Grantees will be evaluated on a variety of criteria, including the estimated size of the target population to be served and the applicant’s overall strength and stability.

“ has proven to be one of NetHope’s staunchest supporters, offering funding and resources at critical times,” said NetHope CEO Lauren Woodman. “Our NetHope members and other nonprofits will find immediate and innovative uses for this funding. We are looking forward to seeing the proposals from our applicants, and the impact this money ultimately will have in underserved communities.”

The NetHope 2017 Device Challenge will be collecting initial Expressions of Interest until January 27, and applications will be accepted between January 30 and February 28. For more information about the NetHope 2017 Device Challenge, please see the program page at the NetHope Solutions Center.
