Emerging Technologies: AI Ethics Webinar Series

A set of webinars to equip the social impact sector with the information they need in order to implement AI responsibly and ethically.

NetHope, USAID, MIT D-Lab, and Plan International are working together to deliver a set of webinars to equip the social impact sector with the information they need in order to implement AI responsibly and ethically.

The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the nonprofit sector is still very nascent, but we’re starting to see the potential for AI to support every aspect of our work – from field programs (health, education, poverty alleviation, conservancy) to powering digital transformation within the organizations. The challenge facing social impact organizations and their partners today is to responsibly develop and use AI technology - maximizing its benefits while minimizing risks and protecting human rights. Social impact organizations have a responsibility to understand AI well enough to know what questions they should be asking when deciding whether and how to use AI, when evaluating its impact and possible consequences. Ethical considerations need to be embedded across all touch-points – the teams we hire, the data we use, how we frame the problem, how we develop and implement the solution, and whether we use powerful AI capabilities that could cause harm.

NetHope, USAID, MIT D-Lab, and Plan International are working together to deliver a set of webinars to equip the social impact sector with the information they need in order to implement AI responsibly and ethically. Below are listed the webinars we have planned for May and June. The recordings and presentation materials will be found on these pages following each webinar:

May 21: Part I AI Ethics Webinar Series Recording available
In this webinar, we’ll explore the following questions:

  • What is ethics? Why does it matter?
  • What is responsible innovation?
  • What are some of the ethical issues surrounding technology use today?
  • A practical example that highlights risks, issues, and path to achieving ethical technology solutions.

June 4: Part II AI Ethics Webinar Series Recording available
In this webinar, we’ll explore the following questions:

  • How can we use AI/ML tools in international development?
  • What are some illustrative values that should guide responsible use of AI in practice?
  • What risks might be encountered with respect to implementing ML/AI tools in accordance with those values?
  • How do you mitigate risks and engage in responsible development and use of AI?

June 18: Part III AI Ethics Webinar Series Recording available
In this webinar, we’ll explore ethical considerations - specifically, fairness - across all stages of a Machine Learning project from problem definition and data collection to model creation, implementation, and maintenance.

July 16: Part IV AI Ethics Webinar Series: Designing Responsible and Ethical Organizations Recording available
IBM and Microsoft join us to discuss how ethical considerations are integrated into organizational culture, processes, and how to design responsible organizations.

We recommend to review the following materials prior to the webinars:
