GenAI adoption in the nonprofit sector is moving faster than most organizations' ability to assess it. Tools arrive with big promises but also hidden costs, data risks, compliance gaps, and consequences for the communities we serve.
This guide helps you slow down just enough to decide well.
What it is: A practical pre-adoption assessment framework built on the PESTLE model, with 72 consolidated questions spanning Political, Economic, Social (addressing the Ethical and Cultural context as well), Technological, Legal and Environmental dimensions. Each question is tagged by who should answer it, the vendor, your organization, or a subject matter expert, and by priority, so you know where to focus first.
Who it is for: Nonprofit staff in IT, operations, procurement, program delivery, compliance, and governance, whether you are evaluating a new tool, running a pilot, or reviewing one already in use.
What it isn't: A scoring model or a shortcut. It supports structured judgment, helping you document what you know, what remains unresolved, and why a tool is or isn't right for your mission. For community-serving organizations, that judgment is anchored in one principle: Do No Harm.
Developed by the NetHope AI and Emerging Tech Working Group, drawing on the real questions nonprofits ask when GenAI comes knocking.
