Over a billion people are either missing or underrepresented on digital maps of the world. People who are 'invisible' on the map are often disproportionately affected by disasters and disconnected from critical services and support.
Over the next five years, the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) aims to add one billion people to a digital, open map of the world known as OpenStreetMap. Machine learning and AI can help augment the efforts of human mappers by recognizing, predicting, and translating satellite imagery into map data that can then be added to OpenStreetMap.
In this webinar, we will provide a brief introduction to satellite imagery and AI in humanitarian contexts, followed by a deep dive into a specific use case. HOT Indonesia team will share how they are using AI assisted mapping in Indonesia, in partnership with Facebook, to enhance the speed and quality of data being added to the map with the goal to get more people connected to critical services and support. During the discussion, well talk about partnerships and ethical considerations related to the use of satellite imagery and AI in humanitarian contexts.
