NetHope announces a $100,000 gift by The Patterson Foundation, boosting NetHope’s work to provide vital support and services to its 57 global nonprofit members helping the world’s most vulnerable. This gift is particularly important as humanitarian nonprofits contend with keeping staff and beneficiaries safe and healthy while still delivering essential services during the COVID-19 crisis.
The international humanitarian system is facing its largest global challenge since WWII. COVID-19 is universally disrupting every aspect of our everyday lives, overwhelming the humanitarian system and impacting nonprofit staff themselves and those they serve through their programs.
“COVID-19 is accelerating and validating the need for technology and collaboration between the nonprofit and tech sectors,” notes Brent Carbno, NetHope’s Managing Director of Global Programs. “NetHope draws on nearly 20 years of experience providing its members—57 of the largest global nonprofits—with technology solutions developed in partnership with some of the leading technology companies and enlightened funders. The Patterson Foundation has long played a vital role in initial funding of NetHope-led projects around the globe, often being ‘first-in’, providing not only much-needed funds but also validation of NetHope’s process.”
With this $100,000 contribution, The Patterson Foundation aspires to catalyze contributions from additional funders to strengthen NetHope’s COVID-19 response effort and support the newly formed task forces created to understand the needs of NetHope’s members. NetHope has often been the “pivot point” for nonprofits during natural and human-caused emergencies, providing vital communications support and services for aid delivery.
“As we each deal with a range of disruption brought on by COVID-19, communities in underdeveloped countries around the globe are also challenged,” said Debra Jacobs, president and CEO of The Patterson Foundation. “The unique worldwide reach of this disaster also creates opportunities to develop and contribute innovative approaches within these communities — information technology innovations that will, in turn, strengthen the global response to the pandemic. NetHope, with its vast array of humanitarian member organizations and broad experience in using technology to respond to global disasters, is connecting for-profit technology giants with on-the-ground knowledge to implement solutions to stem the spread, cope with the realities and make these communities more resilient in the future.”
The Patterson Foundation strengthens the efforts of people, organizations and communities by focusing on issues that address common aspirations and foster wide participation, along with ways organizations learn and share as they evolve. Understanding that disasters take many forms, whether environmental or pandemics, The Patterson Foundation works to create outcomes that strengthen communities recovering from challenging circumstances. To guide these efforts, the Foundation connects with global networks such as NetHope that are evolving the philanthropic sector’s approach to emergencies.
As a longtime supporter of NetHope, The Patterson Foundation has contributed more than $2.1 million in catalytic funding since 2011 to efforts for disasters like the Syrian Refugee Crisis, the Ebola crisis, and Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas.
