Access to new technologies is rapidly improving in emerging markets. This has paved the way for supplying new products and services to people who were once on the other side of the technology gap. Payment services were once a developed world concept. Yet, this particular sector has seen many new innovations that are presenting alternatives to cash in emerging markets.
The private sector has lead the adjustment to these new technologies. Now in Kenya, over 20 financial institutions have linked to M-Pesa in its short 5-years of existence. The NGO and development community have a plethora of new products and services that can improve their operational efficiencies and provide better access to financial services for beneficiaries.
NetHope's Payment Innovations Working Group is excited to explore this topic in more detail with Concern Worldwide's Gabrielle Smith. Gabrielle will present on her findings from a study she co-authored for the Cash Learning Partnership (CaLP) entitled, New Technologies in Cash Transfer Programming and Humanitarian Assistance. Gabrielle is the Social Protection and Safety-Nets Advisor at Concern Worldwide, and has done extensive work in the humanitarian assistance field. She has recently developed a strategy guiding cash transfer programming within Concern.
