Virginia, USA - Ushahidi, a global not-for-profit Kenyan-founded and Kenyan-led technology organization whose vision is to empower communities to thrive as a result of access to data and technology, and NetHope a consortium of the world’s leading humanitarian, development and conservation organizations, have joined forces to launch a groundbreaking pilot initiative in Uganda. The Climate Equity project aims to amplify and integrate community voices, experiences, and needs in the fight against climate change.

URGENCY: Empowering Local Communities for Effective Climate Action

In the face of escalating climate crises, it has become increasingly evident that effective and just climate policies require localized data sourced directly from the communities most affected. The Climate Equity initiative recognizes the urgency of empowering communities with the voice, power, and opportunities needed to innovate sustainable solutions. Unfortunately, the voices of vulnerable communities, such as those in the Women, Youth, and Indigenous groups, are often overlooked and seldom amplified.

HOW: Connecting Global Risks to Local Impact Through Innovative Technology

To bridge this gap, the Climate Equity initiative focuses on creating evidence that connects global climate risks to local impacts and the lived experiences of communities. The initial phase will concentrate on sub-Saharan Africa, where the climate risks are most pronounced. Leveraging cutting-edge digital technologies and emerging tools such as gen AI, the project aims to enhance existing climate models with crucial experience data.

One key innovation of the project is the utilization of stories as data entry forms. By harnessing the power of narratives and leveraging technologies like GenAI, the initiative enables community members to share their experiences in a format that seamlessly integrates with digital models. This approach not only provides a more comprehensive understanding of the local impact of climate change but also ensures that community voices are central to the data collection process.

AMPLIFY & INTEGRATE: A Collaborative Approach for Lasting Change

The collaboration between Ushahidi and NetHope emphasizes the importance of a collaborative approach to address the complexities of adapting to climate change. By amplifying community voices and integrating their experiences into digital models, the Climate Equity initiative aims to facilitate evidence-based decision-making, policy formulation, and targeted actions at local, national, and global levels.
